House of Prayer Lutheran Church had its beginning in 1937 as a branch Sunday School of First Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND. This Sunday School met in its early days in a small wood-framed building adjacent to the Washington Street ball park until another building was obtained on the corner of Sweet Avenue and Washington Street. On August 26th, 1956, House of Prayer was organized officially as a congregation comprised of 80 adults and 68 children.
In 1963, a larger church building was needed and constructed at 417 South Anderson Street. When this new building was dedicated, membership at House of Prayer included 156 adults and 150 children. In the years that followed, House of Prayer experienced considerable growth with baptized membership exceeding 500 people by 1979.
In 1982, a study process was completed leading House of Prayer to its third and present building site on South Washington Street. This new building was finished in May of 1985 and faithfully served House of Prayer's continuous growth until the Spring of 1999.
With a baptized membership of over 1300, it was considered important for House of Prayer's future mission to expand its facility. This time a ground-breaking took place to build a new Fellowship Hall and Education Wing. After dedicating this much-needed space in January 2000, House of Prayer enhanced the size of its Worship Area in a third building project that was dedicated in August 2004.
